CHEMICAL TREATMENTS
The coatings by chemical treatment of steel confers the product particular aethetics and for certain a specific performances.
- Bits brown coatng : oxidation of the steel surface, corrosion protection,
- Bits amber coating : Surface oxidation, product identification (Cobalt, Cut X Gold),
- Sanded bits : glass marbles or steel projection on the bit surface, superficial hardness increase by steel metal working,
- STEAM HOMO coating : surface oxidation (1-2um) by vapor bath, allows the appearance of a superficial microporosity that increases the lubricant adherence. It supports heat dissipation, avoids steel "splicing" in taps during manufacturing. (Recommended for ferrous metals, not recommended for very soft light alloys)
MATERIAL DEPOSITATION
Material depositation has the purpose of protecting the tool, usually against corrosion as well as for giving a specific aspect to the product; these are the Zinc or chrome based coatings :
- White Zinc (concrete drill bits) or amber (knocking tools): protection against corrosion
- Chromed (wrenches) : best protection against corrosion
- Dual chjromed (Golden colored) : protection against corrosion
However, it is possible to protect the tools during manufacture against abrasion or heat, by using in those cases coatings under vacuum metal-ceramics layers (PVD).
Titanium nitride (TiN) is the best known thanks to its Golden color and its marketing interest. But its technical performance gave origin to its diffusion in the industry.
Within its performance spirit, RISS proposed you the standard use of Titanium Nitride with Aluminum Oxide ( TiAIN) on its two product ranges. For trying their performance :
- TiN (yellow golden) : superficial hardness increase and reduction of the friction coefficient for the manufacturing of the abrasive materials.
- TiIAN ( black blue): superficial hardness increase and protection against heat on high speed, dry or of tough materials machining.
ENTER THE CONTEMPORARY MACHINING TECHNIQUES
The industry has used technical coatings on its tools for a long time in order to extend their lifespan, or to make them work under more difficult conditions (greater work pace, dry machining, abrasive materials, etc...).
The benefits on productivity or longevity are clearly perceptible as soon as one works on good quality machines.
The diffusion of these coatings among a larger audience has run up against an under estimation of the induced advantages.
Asides from a few standard ranges suggested with a PVD deposit (Tin or TiAIN), we propose to "boost" your tools on the ranges identified in our catalog by the "rainbow" symbol.
NOTES ON COATINGS
- TiN : Titanium nitride is the simplest coating and covers the most diverse applications of conventional machining.
- TiCN : Titanium nitride with added carbon is particularly indicated for the machining under high thermodynamic constraints (hard steel and\or high cutting speed).
- TiAIN and AIX : The addition of Aluminum to the Titanium niride increases the superficial hardness and gives an exceptional resistance to the oxidation phenomenon at high temperature.
These coatings are particularly indicated when the cutting edges will be subject to extreme temperatures during machining (continuous drilling, dry drilling, high cutting speed).
Note : the AIX (or AITiN) coating corresponds to the traditionnal TiAIN coating but the Aluminum proportion is stronger than that of Titanium nitride.
These hardness and heat resistance are reinforced. - AIXC =AIX + PLC : The PLC superficial layer makes it possible to reduce the friction coefficient while preserving the advantages of hardness and of abrasion resistance that the AIX layer supports .
This coating is particularly indicated for difficult to tap materials (stainless steel) asides from its very powerful anti-adhesive effect. - AlChrom: This high performance coating is an alternative of AIXC with Chromium atoms. This coating makes it possible to protect the tool from oxidation at high temperature, while reinforcing the edges with cuts on the surface to extend its performance in time. This coating is particularly indicated for cast solid carbide drill bits which can reach very high work temperatures with important cutting depths at high cutting speeds.
- DLC : Coating that contains Boron nitride (substitute of artificial diamond)
Its chemical characteristics are preserved for drilling nonferrous materials (aluminum, plastics, graphites, wood...)
